After a two-year renovation, the Petrin Funicular, began carrying passengers again on September 22, 2026, in Prague, Czech Republic. The new cars were manufactured by the Austrian-Swiss group Doppelmayr/Garaventa, based on a design by the Czech studio Anna Maresova designers. They are more glass-enclosed than the previous ones, offering a better view of the city, and their capacity will increase from 100 to 120 passengers. The Petrin Funicular is a popular tourist attraction, offering a unique view of the city. It takes visitors up to the Petrin Lookout Tower, the mirror maze and the Stefanik Observatory. It is part of Prague's public transport system and is regularly used by students living in the Strahov university dormitories as well as by people visiting restaurants, playgrounds and gardens on Petrin Hill. The funicular first began operating on Petrin Hill in the summer of 1891 on the occasion of the General Land Centennial Exhibition as a metre-gauge railway with water balance propulsion. It has experienced two long periods of suspension. In 1916, it was shut down due to World War I, and its service resumed in 1932 when it was electrified.
